Third pilot exercise of the European APPRAISE project in Gdansk

11. October 2023

The third pilot exercise of the APPRAISE project took place in the days between 18 and 22 September 2023 on the sidelines of the TRAKO fair in Gdansk, the largest and most prestigious meeting of the railway industry in Poland. In the scenario of this exercise, a number of tools, technologies and solutions were tested, among which we would like to highlight the following in particular:

- Comprehensive analysis of the Dark Net web and social networks with the aim of identifying hate speech and potential terrorist threats,

- crowd density calculations and analysis of sudden changes in crowd movements,

- Identification of specific sounds when crowd dynamics change,

- detection of security events in public places using drones,

- the use of mobile technologies and applications to communicate with the public and visitors about incidents at specific locations of occurrence,

- the use of Digital Twin solutions and artificial intelligence in security event management processes, with a focus on the integration of different stakeholders involved at operational level in the management of terrorist attacks in public places,

- the cooperation of different stakeholders involved as first responders in the management of incidents such as terrorist attacks on soft targets in public places where large numbers of people are present.

The post-exercise analysis showed a clear progress in the development of cutting-edge technologies and tools being developed within the APPRAISE project in the field of incident management in public places where large numbers of people are present and where there is a higher probability of a terrorist attack on soft targets. The results of the project activities point in the direction of using modern technologies, tools and advanced artificial intelligence solutions to identify security incidents more comprehensively, more quickly and, above all, more efficiently, thereby reducing the likelihood of their occurrence and development.
