Participation in the round table dedicated to migration crisis region of SE Europe

Dr. Denis Čaleta, the representatives of the ICS Ljubljana, as invited expert actively participated in high profile event in organisation of “Veleučilišča Velika Gorica” in Zagreb. He attended in round table on the topic "migration crisis in the wider region of SE Europe". The roundtable was organized on 11th of November 2015 and gathered in one place a large number of experts from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Macedonia.

During the discussion, dr. Denis Čaleta highlighted, that for a proper understanding of the current migration crisis, beside the humanitarian perspective, it is important the following:

  • Geo-strategic aspect that goes far beyond the influence of the region;
  • Cultural and sociological aspect, since that framework is completely different from the one in which the region has experienced during the Balkan conflict;
  • The safety aspect, that after the terrorist attacks in Paris, gaining weight especially in the migration crisis;
  • The biggest challenge, which currently waiting Europe, focuses on the process of appropriate integration of refugees and migrants. The current practice has been extremely poor.
  • The economic aspect which cannot be ignored. Costs posed by migration are not only directly related to budgetary expenditures, but also indirectly, with a significant impact on the economy, tourism and the rest of the region important industries.
