At the international conference "Challenges of countering terrorism in South-East Europe" more than 230 participants from 29 countries

Institute for Corporative Security Studies, Ljubljana ICS again demonstrated that they can successfully carry out a unifying role in the transfer of knowledge and best practices in the field of countering terrorism in the wider international context. ICS-Ljubljana with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Slovenia, the U.S. Embassy and the Centre for Civil-military relations from Monterrey, USA again co-organized an important international conference.

The above facts give already the fifth anniversary international conference special importance. The conference was held from 27 to 29 November 2012, in the conference facilities Command for Doctrine, Development, Education and Training Slovenian Armed Forces in Maribor. The conference was attended by representatives of 29 countries and four international organizations, together with both academic and professional environment, resulting in an excellent basis for the success of this event. The conference has basically grown beyond a regional framework and in particular the number of participants reflects the fact that the management of threats of international terrorism can only be effective in close cooperation with all entities of the international community.

The special scientific publication titled "Managing the Consequences of Terrorist Acts - Efficiency and Coordination Challenges," by editors. Dr. Denis Caleta and Captain Paul Shemella were issued at the Conference.


The main emphasis and substantive scope of the conference

The conference opening speeches delivered by senior representatives of co-organizations of this events, the Director-General of Intelligence and Security Service Mr. Bostjan Perne, U.S. Ambassador to Slovenia Mr. Joseph A. Mussomeli, CCMR representative Dr. Thomas Mockaitis and a representative of ICS Ljubljana g. Andrej Podvršič started the Conference.

The importance of a single international conference witnessed by the fact that the event was an honorary opening address by Prof. Dr. Ernest Petric, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia, and the opening was also attended by other important guests. Mrs. Zdenka Čebasek Travnik, Ombudsman Republic of Slovenia, Brigadier General Dr. Andrej Osterman, Deputy Chief of General Staff, Mr. Karol Turk, Deputy Director General of Police, Mr. Tomaž Kancler, Deputy Mayor of the city of Maribor and other important guests. In essence, the conference opened Dr. Damir Črnčec, Director of National Intelligence and Security service and national coordinator of anti-terrorist measures.

The presentations and discussions at the conference offered various opinions and solutions in the process of eliminating the consequences of terrorist acts committed. Within three days of the conference there was wide selection of 33 conference presentations through eleven sections, which allowed us a detailed insight into different segments of the topic.

The representatives of ICS-Ljubljana and the Slovenian Association of Corporate Security played very important role at the International Conference. Dr. Denis Čaleta was in fact President of the Organizing Committee of the Conference, Mr. Andrej Podvršič, carried out an excellent lecture entitled "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" (If you wish peace, Prepare for war) at the opening panel of the conference.
